The Spirit – Songs Against Humanity

22 January 2025

The Spirit released their fourth album, “Songs Against Humanity” in October 2024. First of all, I should mention that the album cover had been made by Eliran Kantor and it is really great.

The Spirit is one of the most successful bands drawing their inspirations largely from Dissection. Jon Nödtveidt, as you know, in the last Dissection album, Reinkaos, mixing cosmic subjects with satanism, took a different path lyrically than the previous ones, before he sadly passed away by taking his own life. However, this change was not limited to the lyrics only. Dissection’s music also changed a bit. Frankly, I personally think that Reinkaos is the weakest part of short but legendary Dissection discography especially taking into account that it is the last album of the legacy.

The Spirit, who released their first album a decade after Reinkaos, have been continuing their style combining lyrics about the cosmos with supporting visuals and maturing since the beginning. The band take their musical inspiration from Dissection’s legendary pre-Reinkaos era. They do this in a brighter way than Dissection, by incorporating everything beautiful about death and black metal into their music skillfully. As far as I can observe as a listener, they have been rapidly increasing their fan base.

Guitarist/vocalist Matthias, who is responsible for all the creative process of the band, is a true master of his craft, as you will notice when you witness the album performance, throughout which the same quality continues from beginning to the end. Drummer Manuel is also much more than an ordinary drummer. He is a competent instrumentalist and his contribution to the music is great. The drum sound is also excellent.

I must say that it is a first-class work as a whole package in terms of visual presentation, production quality and everything that can be mentioned about an album. It is clear as day that the band, who have become more and more professional by the time passing, consist of two ambitious and talented guys.

I would have liked to review this before the end of 2024, but I maybe doing this in early 2025 will help listeners notice it if they unluckily missed it when it came out. The album, which consists of 7 songs and has a running time of just over 40 minutes, is one of the best of the year it came out. In the intro song Against Humanity, vocalist Matthias shouts “We are the engineers of our own kind” and Alien and Prometheus come to mind. Very good album, definitely listen to it.
