Asinhell – Impii Hora

9 January 2024

Volbeat’s main man, Michael Poulsen, returned to Death Metal after many years and while doing this, he took Marc Grewe of Morgoth fame and Morten Toft Hansen from Raunchy with him. Poulsen, who has always expressed his interest in heavy music throughout the years, taken a break from composing death metal and has hosted important names from time to time in his Volbeat albums, says hello with an impressive death metal feast.

I think Poulsen wanted to focus on his instrument in the album, so Grewe takes part in the vocals instead. Frankly, it turns out to be a very good decision. Grewe delivers a high-class vocal performance in the album where he reflects his years of experience.

2023 was a stagnant year for Volbeat. Poulsen turned this into an opportunity and managed to throw the ball to the 90′. On the contrary, 2023 was a busy year for Marc Grewe but he didn’t say no to Poulsen. We see Mr. Grewe as the singer in 2023 albums of Deimos’ Dawn, Discreation and Leper Colony in addition to Asinhell.

It is possible to define the music on the album as in-your-face death metal. It is an album that is close in style to death metal albums released in Europe, or more specifically, the Scandinavian peninsula. Names like Entombed and Dismember are the first ones that come to mind. This situation actually coincides with what is explained in the video about how Asinhell came to life, published on Metal Blade’s YouTube channel.

Michael says that he is a big Entombed and Morgoth fan and that he and Marc have been talking about this band possibility since 10-12 years ago. Marc adds that they have always talked about that but he thought it would not be possible due to Volbeat’s extremely busy program. Michael tells that he had used to talk to LG Petrov (R.I.P.) on the phone from time to time in the past, but he could not answer LG’s last phone call because he was not in a suitable position for being able to pick up the phone and soon after he received the news of his death. One day, Michael’s iPod automatically started playing Entombed. Hearing LG’s voice shouting “I’m full of hell”, Michael thought it was a call from LG and that the time had come. He called Marc Grewe right away.

The result is a wonderful band that I hope will be active for many years to come. Michael says he’s confident they’ll release more albums. As far as I can see on the band’s website, if they do not appear elsewhere in the meantime, they will perform their first live performance at Rock am Ring on June 7, 2024. And subsequently they will play at many other festivals. It is impossible to disagree with Marc Grewe’s comment. There is music here that needs to be performed live.
